Sphynx Cat Holidays

Currently Sphynx Cat Luna, skin person Ian, and I, are away on holidays.
Sphynx Kitten Pierre stayed at home with skin person Kelsie. Where we are is a 5 1/2 hour drive from our home in the city and Luna absolutely loves it here. We have been bringing Luna here since she was about a year old and made sure she was acclimatised to riding in the car as soon as we got her, taking her everywhere… shopping, visiting relatives, picking up children from school and bus stops.
Getting your Sphynx used to the car is pretty much a must-do if you plan on minimising the hassle that comes with a cat that freaks out inside a car. Try letting your kitten wander about in the car while it is stationary in your driveway. Being a Sphynx they will want to investigate EVERYTHING inside, let them without grabbing at them or shouting so they know the car is a “safe place”.
Then take them for shortish trips around the block. Harnessing you cat will depend on the laws in your area, but also whether you think it is safer to have your Sphynx tethered rather than becoming a projectile should you need to stop suddenly.
Luna loves this place so much because we let her roll in the warm sand that surrounds the house (mud brick in virgin bush). She knows when we start packing the car with bags that we are going to go on a trip and gets excited. In the first half hour of the trip she will meowing and roll excitedly and then eventually settle down to sleep the rest of the way.
This photo is from one of Luna’s first long trips and you can see she made herself as warm and comfortable as possible between the pillows in the warm car.
We always travel with a bowl and bottled water so that we can stop and give Luna a drink around the 2 hour mark. Another tip is to have the litter box ready at the end of the trip. Luna knows to run into the bathroom as soon as we get to the holiday house because we leave clean litter there when we leave. The relief on her face can be comical.
