Sphynx Cat Clothes : Survey Results

Wow I forgot to put up the results to my Sphynx Cat / Sphynx Kitten clothing survey.

So without further ado here they are. Feel Free to discuss in the comments because there are some interesting facts in the results.

Q1: How many Sphynx Cats do you own

sphynx_cat_clothes_q1

Ok so my dream of having 6 Sphynxes will make me definitely in the minority. Look at all those single Sphynxes… I hope they have friends at home to play with because a single Sphynx cat alone is a sad kitty.

Q2: Do You Dress Your Sphynx

sphynx_cat_clothes_q2

Well we have almost half and half. I should have asked as well where people were from to see if that matched whether their climate is mostly chilly.

Q3: Do You Object To Clothing Sphynxes?

This was an interesting one. The vast majority of responses are OK with dressing Sphynxes, and a whopping 58% are cool with dressing your Sphynx up in silly clothes (silly being in the eye of the beholder :) )

Q4: I Make My Own Sphynx Cat Clothing

Heh, not everyone is a sewing or knitting artist it seems. Good thing there are some of us Sphynx cat owners that are!

Q5: What Kind of Clothes Do You Dress Your Sphynx In?

(select all that apply)

T-Shirts win! But a good many of you also go for the sweatshirt and knitted sweater.

Speaking of knitted Sphynx sweaters, have you entered our easy competition to be in the running to win one? It is ridiculously easy to enter – just leave your name and email address so you can receive our Sphynx Cat  newsletter.

Sphynx Cat Cleaning – Out! Out! Brown Spot!

Some Sphynx cats have clean-ish dry skin,

some have oily easily dirtied skin. I have been editing a bonus video that will be added to the Sphynx cat book that will be released shortly. To make things look really “bad” so they stand out in the film, we let Sphynx Cat Luna and Sphynx Kitten Pierre get really dirty.

To demonstrate how dirty, here is a picture of Pierre’s favourite warm spot when one of the computers is on. Yep that is just his oil over a 3 week period, talk about grubby!

Like humans, oily skin and dry skin have their different pros and cons. Pierre’s oily skin means he doesn’t flake or get itchy like Luna’s dry skin does . Luna doesn’t leave such large oil spots around the place (though she does make some!).

Because Luna does have such dry skin and gets so very itchy we use a particular type of wash for her so that she doesn’t scratch herself to a bloody mess. She doesn’t do well with any detergent or soap based product. The video shows what we use on her if you are curious, and of course the book goes into the skin thing in greater detail.

Sphynx Cats – The Book!

Yes things have been quiet over here on the Sphynx Cat blog

and the reason is I have been putting the finishing touches on a book I have been writing. The book is about….you guessed it Sphynx Cats! It is aimed at new, and prospective, Sphynx cat and Sphynx kitten owners and has a host of information covering everything you need to know about this awesome breed of cat.

At the moment I am editing some bonus video material to go with the book which will cover some of the most asked about questions people ask me. Fun stuff!

The first people to be offered this book will be the members of the Sphynx cat blog mailing list which sends out regular emails covering everything Sphynx cat related (including contests and give-aways). If you have not joined the mailing list yet then it’s time to get right on that. The first contest for members will be starting up soon and you don’t want to miss out.

Meanwhile Luna the Sphynx Cat and Pierre the Sphynx Kitten have been enjoying being the stars of the book and have been helping what glamour shots should go where. Well maybe not, but they sure have been helping out with the videos and pictures by being their usual rambunctious selves.

p.s. If there has been a question you have always wanted answered in a Sphynx Cat book, ask away in the comments. I still have some time before the final edit is signed off.

Sphynx Cat Tails

The tail of the Sphynx Cat

is one of the curiosities that draws attention whenever you introduce your Sphynx to someone unfamiliar with the breed. Cat owners will know that the cat’s tail is a source of amusement for kittens, a signal device to you and other cats about the mood of the feline, and something that can get shut in doors if you aren’t careful.

For the Sphynx the tail is also an extremity that is exposed directly to the cold and is the first place to feel it.

Sphynx cat Luna chooses to keep her tail warm by curling it into a tight coil, like a piggy’s tail. Then she sits on it, tucked between her legs and under her stomach; which conveniently has “fat pads” as a result of hormones after her desexing. There she keeps it warm and hidden away, although the tuft of hair at the end might be peeking out occassionally and become a “lure” for Sphynx Kitten Pierre… like an angler fish.

Sphynx Kitten Pierre's Chewed Tail

Sphynx Kitten Pierre's Chewed Tail

Pierre is still a long slim Sphynx kitten and has no extra pudding to keep his tail warm, so he stores it as most other cats do, by curling it backwards into the crevice over the top of his leg and against his side.

Pierre does have an issue with his tail, although the issue may be more to do with his brain than his tail. His kitten playfulness in “catching and killing” his tail may have developed into something more sinister. Without fur there is no protection for the Sphynx skin and scratches and scrapes do happen during boisterous play. Pierre’s tail tip has some scabbing on it from his biting it.

After some research on the web about cat obsessive-compulsive behaviour and feline hyperthesia syndrome and I am not convinced either to to be the issue. At this stage we are monitoring his behaviour to see if it escalates or is related to anything (like the house move recently) if it has not changed for the better in a month we will take him for a check up at the vet.
